The goal is to write!

Setting goals is an important part of life. Personally, I am very goal-oriented. In October of 2009, I created a word document that contained my life’s goals. I love to return to that document to remind myself of what it is that I’m working toward. Each October since then, I have re-visited that document for the purpose of monitoring progress and updating my goals. This year, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I’d crossed a group of goals from the list! I finished graduate school, moved back to Oregon, and married my wonderful lovey-face, Dave!

However, there’s one goal that has been on my list since before I even started writing goals down, and that is to write novels. This goal is one of the most important to me, but when life gets crazy, it has to take a back seat. Fortunately, over the last six months (you know, since I finished school and have been unemployed), I have had the greatest opportunity to find out who I am as a writer. Having that self-knowledge has been super helpful in allowing me to design goals that are more fitting than the previous goal of:  “Write series of novels.”

Here’s what I’ve come up with for my writing goals:

Overall statement:  I want to write books that tickle the imagination, that serve as an escape from reality, that inspire and encourage people everywhere. I want to write stories that improve the quality of life for people. That’s what I want to create.

1. Get into the habit of writing first thing in the morning. Right when I wake up. No matter how much I write, I need to write first thing.

2. Find balance between website maintenance and novel writing

3. Try out some different genres

  • Murder mystery
  • Cowboy romance
  • Kids’ adventure
  • Vampire faery tales (sleeping beauty, duh she sleeps all day, she’s a vamp. Lol)
  • Historical mystery

4. Write a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo in November. This comes out to about 1700 words per day.

Wish me luck!
